I wrote an article last week on Graphic Design.com to a poll question I raised a few weeks ago.
In the current economic climate, do designers need a degree, or is it superfluous? I did my BA in 2 -dimensional design, then worked for 5 years before commencing an MA in Design Management as a part time course. Both courses helped me enormously, but then I am a geek and adore studying. Also, fees were not as astronomical as they are now, and the job market was quite different.
I love the infographic which accompanies the poll results, crafted by the team at Killer Infographics.
So what do you think? Join the debate over on Graphic Design.com or leave me comments below.
Welcome to today’s Creative Crush David Kirkby, a very talented musician and designer/illustrator who has just released his “Film” collection of “instantly iconic” prints.
This week was World Book Day, and I want to share with you what is currently on my pile of bedside reading… I am currently working my way through Happy: Secrets to Happiness from the cultures of the world by Lonely Planet, which brings together snippets of cultures from around the globe and their practises to achieve happiness. A beautiful, well illustrated coffee table browsing book it’s a brilliant gift for someone who needs cheering up. Also on the list is Michael Bierut’s 79 Short Essays on Design, which I wrote about for Graphic Design.com here. Bierut is a Pentagram partner and emminant designer and design writer; the book is a series of short, easily digestable essays which are great to dip in and out of. Like a lot of academic stuff I find the writing loses it’s way on occasion (too many ways to explain a simple concept), but as thought fodder for designers, it’s a great one to have on coffee breaks. Next up is one currently on my wishlist; Type Matters is a lovely book by University graphics lecturer Jim Williams’ who created an A4 booklet, originally created to hand to his students, which is now re-purposed and set to be published in April as a 160 page, faux leather covered note book (via Creative Review).
This has been a subject leading to much gnashing of teeth lately from reading my Twitter feeds.
Social media has allowed designers, writers and bloggers who charge well below industry rates, or even rates for juniors/newly experienced etc to be widespread and vocal. Blog designs for peanuts, social media management for way below minimum wage, design for paper boy pay. I work across graphic design, copy and editorial writing and blogging, and have a weekly rant to myself about some of the prices I see bandied about online.
So, what does it have to do with me? Surely people can charge what they want? Read More >
