The blogging frame of mind

Bloggingframeofmind

Whenever I blog for a client or for one of my sites, the working format and frame of mind is something that I tend to replicate each time.

I would love to know how you readers approach your blog writing tasks too, it would be great to compare notes.

For me, I need the following:

1. A semi tidy desk if I am working on the iMac, or a comfortable place to be if I am out and about on the iPad. Somehow if the area I am in feels cluttered my brain won’t fire out the words efficiently.

2. A cup of something hot (usually redbush tea, sometimes coffee although I am cutting down, often tea).

3. A quiet mind – if I am in a creative “buzz” frame of mind I have to work on training it to calm down and focus if I am on a client deadline.
Apps like Headspace really help with that, or I just take 5 minutes to practise mindfulness and breathing.

3. Emails, Skype, Gchat and messenger apps turned off (or I get distracted).

4. Some good writing tunes on Spotify. For me, depending on the day, that can be Daft Punk (my fail safe choice), some drum and bass or calming Bach.

5. An hour clear without phone calls interrupting, the Minis due home or visitors arriving.

If I am finding the post challenging, I often use the “chunking” method, something I talk about on the Idea Generation for Bloggers course, and break the task into slices of 15 minutes with an alarm on my iPhone to keep me focussed.

Sometimes I have too many post ideas accumulating in my mind and I take to some old school methods and get them all out on post it notes.I can then edit them, re-arrange and prioritise; sometimes the offline ways are best.

I would love to hear how you all work – what music works best for you, how you avoid distractions and mind wandering.

Also, do you find it easier blogging for yourself or for clients?

Tools and apps for creative workflow: updated post

Posted on: Tuesday, February 19, 2013

geek chic and business

Waaay back in September of 2011 when I was just a youngster I wrote this post about Tools and Apps for Creatives, including some of my tips on creating an effective, easy workflow. An update has been the acquisition of an iPad, and the discovery of new software in the last 18 months. How time flies! So, here is my updated version:

Working with a hyper creative person can be inspiring, energetic and hard work. Just ask any of my colleagues past, present and, no doubt, future. Also, as a freelance working mum when time is always of the essence, organisation and harnessing time and efficiency is key to Getting Stuff Done and Staying Sane.

If you are a creative bod, there are several things you can do to help yourself in your work-flow and productivity. If, like me, you generate ideas at all times of day and night, have several plates spinning and don’t function in a logical, linear way, read on. Read More >

Instagram: Control > alt> delete?

Posted on: Tuesday, December 18, 2012

I love Instagram. Or at least I did, until today when the Facebook-owned visual life casting platform announced (rather misleadingly, at the back of their “preview” terms and conditions), that things are changing.

The things that are changing are, primarily, that from the 16th January 2013 Instagram will have the legal rights to your images, lock, stock and two smoking filters. They can sell them, profit from them, use them as their own global bank of imagery to license as they see fit, and we cannot do anything about it.

Other than delete our accounts, that is.

Why would you even hesitate to delete an account, then? Because, for many of us, Instagram has become as much a way of social media life as Twitter, Facebook and Pinterest. Visual lifecasting has it’s own merits and it’s own community and associated culture; it’s not just about the lomo lense you know. We like to share things and comment on other people’s imagery; it is a well established community of users, particularly among the blogging, fashion, beauty and crafting set, and this blow has evoked a backlash from the grass roots users who feel, quite frankly, shafted by the big boys.

So, what to do?

You could delete your account to play safe. In this instance, Twitter’s well timed filters release may tempt you to use an existing social platform visually. Yes, I know it’s not the same but still…

Hipstamatic may suddenly become appealing again, as will other Insta-esque apps who aren’t likely to sell their soul down the $1 billion pound river anytime soon.

Failing that, you could hold fire and see what happens next; InstaBook/Facegram may still re-word their oh-so-intrusive t’s and c’s following the backlash, but hey, they are HUGE so it’s not a cert that they should listen to the little guys.

In playing safe you could limit what you take images of to anything non-personal. So, no pics of kids and family or nudey rudey shots in pants etc…you never know where they may end up.

I am going to play safe and see what rolls out from this. It is an interesting landmark in social media’s changing landscape, and yet another reminder that we are being watched more than we know.

What will you do?

UPDATE: 19th December 2012. Instagram say they are listening to user’s complaints and that they will update their t’s and c’s. Lets see!

Spoonflower

Did you know you can make and design your own fabric now? I am so inspired by Spoonflower and the print on-demand fabric service they offer. Time to get creative and design some fabrics for the home, for clothes, or just ‘cos I think..✄business and pleasureI love the notebooks and stationery by Bobs Your Uncle; as a stationery freak ( you can’t beat a lovely notebook I say) and the range on the site are colourful, exciting and beautiful. I love the Open Sesame password reminder notebook too. Sometimes there is a need to be analogue and offline, much as I love my apps and digital workflow tools ✎

Thanks to Swiss Miss for stumbling across Unit 101′s fabulous laptop and iPad carrying unit bags. #iwant

Pizza Express new legera

Now, I LOOOOVE Pizza Express and I do tend to have a Legera Pizza as they are only 500 calories and taste lovely. Pizza Express emailed me today to announce they have two new Legera flavours out, American Hot and Padana so I thought I would share it with you, as I will be finding an excuse to check them out at the weekend.. Check out the re-brand too, very black and white but retaining the art-nouveau styling. ❤

A beautiful mess blog

I discovered this gorgeous blog this week, A Beautiful Mess by Elsie Larson. Aside from the beautiful design, I love the content: full of vintage and crafty stuff it is also all about designing your creative career. Right up my street. Go and say hi to Elsie and see what you think. #linklove ♺

✎ This week I wrote about SOPA and the campaign to stop the act being passed at Congress over on Blur group.
✎ I also wrote about Nike Make it Count over on Grpahic Design.com (which is having a much needed re-design!)

My essential offline work tools

Posted on: Tuesday, January 17, 2012

I wrote a post recently about my favourite tools and apps for a creative workflow. and a designer workflow for working lessThere are, however, some essential offline tools I always turn to when I am ready to get into my zone and crack out a post or get going on some designs.

Simply, they are: coffee, (always fresh), in a designer-cliché Pantone mug + my pink JOTTRR pad and pen ( with coloured ink, if I have some around). What do you use to work? What are your offline work essentials?

To do lists – creatively beautiful or restrictive?

Posted on: Saturday, November 5, 2011

I love this image, which has appeared on a couple of blogs I love this week, Swiss Miss and Nextness but hails from Melissa Easton Design.

I am such a list person. Whether post-it notes, notebooks in my handbag, massive mindmaps on rolls of wallpaper or my current favourite, Wunderlist, the art of list-making has always been a huge part of my life. But do they help and inspire us, or are they self-imposed restrictions? Read More >

Diva Tech: Online moodboard

Posted on: Wednesday, October 12, 2011

Now you all know I am a bit of a geek.
I adore my Pinterest, love my apps and as a designer I am a sucker for moodboards.

Enter stage right Moodie, an online  moodboard application.

Currently still in beta, you can sign up for early adopter access and new as it comes, but this little baby looks set to be really handy. Aiming to help clients and designers nail a brief effectively thus saving time (and ultimately money) it is certainly be a tool I will be investigating thoroughly to use at Cherry Sorbet.

Are there other moodboard apps out there that you love? Share the knowledge if there are!
