Bloggers guide to growing your readers

bloggers guide

Calling all bloggers! If you, like me, are on the journey of growing your blog like a precious seedling to become a successful site, there is one thing we all need without fail.

Readers.

Without those elusive readers,  we blog away into the ether to our heart’s content  -all well and good if that’s your schtick – but for the business minded, growth savvy blogger the long game of growing readership is a slow burn process.

Growing a readership is the holy grail. We write, we promote the posts on Facebook, Twitter, G+, klaxon, ESP….whatever you need to do to get the eyes on the page – whichever way you slice it, the growth of stats is a slow burn thing and takes time, effort, graft, and a lot of patience (and coffee). Fear not –  there are some tips and tricks that will help you.

There are SO many posts about the best ways to do this. A quick “how to get more readers for your blog” Google  search will show up hundreds. This is just my take, my experience, and my viewpoint. Take it or leave it, but I  hope you find my two penn’orth useful. Read More >

Guest Diva: Lisa on chronic illness

Posted on: Tuesday, May 29, 2012

When I was very kindly asked to write this piece, I did think – ‘Am I the right person?’ I’ve really never thought of myself as ‘chronic’ before. To the point where I actually looked it up, just to make sure I was.

“A chronic condition is a human health condition or disease that is persistent or otherwise long-lasting in it’s effects”

Ah, o.k.

I live with a few conditions, but I’ve never thought of myself as suffering with them to be honest. I was born with Cerebral Palsy on the left hand side of my body. I know no different. This in itself makes it easier to deal with. To me it is ‘normal’ Ask me if I could change it tomorrow, I would honestly say no. In my mind, there is nothing wrong with me. My balance and motor skills can be a bit dodgy sometimes. The more stressed , tired or agitated I am, the worse they get, but generally living with it is easy. Explaining it to people sometimes is the hard bit. “ I would not have guessed, really, you have cerebral palsy, but you are SO capable!” is the response I get from a lot of people. They mean well, but I often wonder where they got their slightly misguided vision of Cerebral Palsy from. Bits of my body may not work 100%, but my brain works perfectly thank you. As do many people’s with CP. The fantastic comedian Laurence Clark has a PHD in Computer Science and his wife Adele who also has CP is studying for a Masters degree. You get my point. There is still a long way to go in changing people’s perception of disability sadly. The more people in the public eye with disabilities, the better I believe. You have to start with yourself if you want to change attitudes though. Read More >

Fancy Floral footwork

fancy floral footwork

Finally, FINALLY the Spring sunshine has decided to rock up (can I get a HALLELUJAH?!) and it’s making me smile……
All around the flowers are suddenly brighter, colours vibrant and England is a beautiful place to be. Hurrah. In an instant those weeks of rain and longing for the Balaerics are forgotten. Almost *hides web history*….

I love the floral trends this season; from my beloved All My Finds dress to the palazzo pants and wedges around, I am excited about the florals both funky and feminine.

Here are my favourite florals: Read More >

Ok – my hair needs a cut, and I took these during a busy afternoon so not looking my best at all… (brain definitely frazzled and in need of a stiff rum and coke with ice)…but I HAD to share my amazing Brighton Rock dress from the All My Finds Pick ‘n Mix collection that I wrote about back in April. I love this dress, and I am so SO excited that summer has come at last and I can wear it.  Check out the rest of the collection and tell me you aren’t tempted?

Alter egos and giveaway

Posted on: Thursday, May 24, 2012

I love the notion of alter egos.

Obviously blogging as Dexterous Diva is one, but I have toyed with the concept of the different parts of me having their own personality – in a non-schizophrenic way, of course – for some time. My various therapists have often raised an eyebrow as I happily chat about Joanne, Daphne and Roxy, but hey, if I am not hearing voices ( all the time, at least) it’s all good as far as I am concerned. Insert pause here to rock back and forth slightly.

I used to refer to my alter ego Joanne, the new business meeting/networking/academic me in my previous roles in my career – Joanne always wore heels, red lippie and had her head screwed on. I trusted her to do things I didn’t believe that Jo could – she was my confidence shield and the person I needed to become to be forthright, manage people, and have the confidence to to doubt myself. Roxanne/Roxy is my bubbly, outgoing, flirtacious and sexy minx alter ego, although since endo came back so badly after my twin pregnancy she seems to be on extended leave… any sightings please let me know. Daphne is the one who came out on Post Natal depression days and thankfully is less in situ these days, but can be a handful when she arrives unannounced.

Of course, it’s all me,  just on different days and in different moods, but I LOVE the idea that we can be who we want to be and present oursleves however we want to aid confidence, mindset, or just ‘cos. Maybe it’s about finding the space to be who you need to be, to divide your brain between work mode, mum mode, I am sure the alter ego is a useful tool for many of us. Read More >

Unreliable or endo?

Posted on: Monday, May 21, 2012

This postcard, the 3rd in the series by  the wonderful Antonia, is so brilliant at relating the feeling of unreliability that endo sisters and others suffering from a chronic condition go through. The number of times I have had to cancel at last minute my plans due to pain or exhaustion are countless; luckily, my close friends and family know the score, they support me 100% and everyone knows there is a 50/50 chance I will ever be somewhere I plan to be. Those who don’t get it never will and are not worth my time.

It’s tough, it’s frustrating, but it’s life. It’s my life, and the life of many, many other ladies out there.

If you know how this feels and would be willing to share your story as a guest Diva, please drop me a line.

Cybher 2012

Posted on: Monday, May 14, 2012

On Saturday 12th May I presented to a room of delegates at Cybher and was not even there. Go technology. Go amazing co workers.

Last September I was introduced by a mutual friend to the lovely Sian To, who was organising the first ever all inclusive women’s blogging and social media conference - Cybher.

Sian asked me to do a session at Cybher. I said no, I couldn’t, as back then I had started my Zoladex treatment and felt more than ever that I could not commit to an event without the very real possibility of pain being too bad to cancel.  As the months rolled on, I wanted more and more to be involved and could see what a wonderful event it was going to be.
