So this week I have been ♥ living in my Charlotte & Co. harem lounge pants and waterfall cardi - essential wear for a self employed homeworker and PERFECT for endo ladies – gorgeous, comfy, and stylish!  ♥ loving Crown Paints vintage range by Wayne Hemingway and his wife, of Red or Dead fame. We are planning to re-vamp the Diva household, so swatches and moodboards all the way ♥ I designed my very own RULE bike, and I am SO excited! The lovely people at Rule invited me to get creative and design my own bike in time for some Easter cycling. I can’t wait to show you the finished item. What do you think? Would you have used the same colours or gone for something a little more subtle?  ♥ visiting the Marilyn exhibition at Getty Images Gallery - what an amazing chance to see the gorgeous, infamous costumes of Marilyn Monroe up close. A fellow Endo sister and curvy lady she is one of my idols. Go and check it out, it’s on until June… I checked out the Pick me Up fair at Somerset House, celebrating the illustration and craft industry. Pop along to do your own screenprint with Print Club London, and get inspired by the wonderful work on show. Do you believe in yourself?

Posted on: Tuesday, March 27, 2012

Living a freelance or self employed life requires a lot of self talk and motivation. For 6 years now
I have talked myself into keeping motivated for work, to come up with ideas, and I am the one
who needs to give myself a pat on the back if something goes well.

I am a very social creature and love working in a studio. I have co-working spaces which I
tap into and the very fact of being around other humans to banter and interact makes such
a difference to the way I work; I thrive on being sociable, I love being surrounded by creative
people and the buzz from working together on projects.

One of the biggest things about working alone versus a team is that the self talk we give
ourselves can so often be negative. I am sure many of you reading this will know what I mean.
A colleague might encourage and say “Wow, that was a great brainstorm, well run”, or “Jo is
great at editorial layouts, let’s get her to have a look”. The cumulative result is that you believe
in what your colleague says. They say you can do it, so you can.

In contrast, negative self talk can be equally as damaging. “I can’t do that, they will think I am
silly”, or “I don’t have very good ideas, I’d better let someone else do that”. How would you feel
if a colleague followed you around all day saying how bad you are at your work? Wouldn’t you
be upset, feel down, under confident?

I was back in London this weekend, and the weather, sights, sounds and smells took me right
back to my first job in the city some 14 years ago when I was a junior designer at Toni&Guy – a
role I absolutely loved. Not only did I never once think that I couldn’t do it, but I also used to ring
Art Editors of magazines in my spare time and do illustration portfolio drop off’s in my lunch hour
for freelance work (as we used to do in the old days), and I would never, EVER have thought
twice about my ability to be used for work. SO the work came, I went from strength to strength
and had a very well paid, respected senior role at a young age as I moved up the ladder.

The older we get the easier it is to doubt ourselves, but why, why put yourself through that?

Mike Sullivan is a brilliant confidence coach who works with corporates and individuals (ahem,
me…) to get their mojo back. He says:

“I tell all my clients that they are in charge of their confidence, not somebody else; they can
set it high or low; so why chose low? Because you’re “just you”, “nothing special” “little Miss
Average”. That’s such a waste of time and opportunity. Chose a higher setting, silence the inner
demon that reduces you, and go for “I’m amazing” “I’m unique” “I’m one of a kind”. Positive self
image starts from what you say to yourself in the silence of your own head. Take control. Drive
it. Set it to Maximum. Confidence begins at home”

I keep a note on my iPhone and Mac from am email one of my best friends Emma sent me. Emma is an incredibly smart, very successful lady and I have a lot of respect for her professionally as well, of course, as loving her dearly as a buddy. We worked together and studied our MA together, and I treasure her words which I keep for whenever I feel a bit low or doubt myself.
She says:

“You have inspired and delighted me the moment we met. Not only are you such fun to be round you have really made me think. I have always loved how open and honest you are about things. You would talk freely about stuff that I would always keep to myself. You made me realise how refreshing and fun it is to be honest about how you feel, to embrace the fact that you feel grumpy and fed up as much as you would being happy or excited.

Without you I would never be where I am today. It was you that inspired me and highlighted the MA. It was also you that helped give me confidence and support through the course which I initially found way out of my depth.

I love your idea generation and your smartness. Your mind is 100mph and you are tapped into everything. I LOVE our conversations. They leave me refreshed and inspired.

Another thing that I inspires me is how you still run your business and are a mummy to twins. Jeeezzzzzz that is an amazing super action hero feat. The challenges you have over come for those ladies is incredible and you should be very proud of yourself.

Another thing is how well you deal with your endo. You never moan or complain and are so positive about any hard times you are going through.

You are also an amazing friend.

I love you Jo, you inspire me and bring so much fun and laughter. I also know you would be there in the bad times too. Amazing. Believe it.”

As you can imagine this always makes me smile. Why not ask a friend how they view you? Keep the list somewhere safe for when those demons come to nibble.

So, how can you believe in yourself more today? What would you say differently? Tell me something you are GREAT at. Oh, and if you didn’t already know it? You rock.

x

Of geekery, cleaning and clutter

geekery, cleaning and clutter

So at last, and I mean AT LAST Papa Diva and I are tackling our post-twins, post-moving house clutter. I am going through each room, archiving stuff we want to keep in boxes. Each box has a with Google doc relating to it’s contents and a QR code to stick on each box so we can scan and know what’s in there… This, dear readers, makes me warm and tingly from my grey geek matter down. I think our urge to declutter is partly a natural Spring urge to get sorted and clean after a Winter encased in dust and crap, and partly down to the new Channel 4 series Get Your House in Order.

The show features hoarders who are made to empty everything out of their homes and sell their excess rubbish for funds to have their home re-done by the show’s interior designer. It is actually terrifying to see the amount of complete and utter CRAP that people hoard, and I am so paranoid about clutter becoming uncontrollable that it has kickstarted a little regime. (check it out on Thursdays).

Now, to be fair, usually in the evenings sorting out our pit after the madness of working, having toddler twins and trying to fit in any form of exercise too is the last thing on my mind (the first being to cower, shaking in a corner with redbush tea, and loungewear). So to make it easy I have started doing just 8 minutes a day of anti-crap sorting. It doesn’t sound like much, by by jove it does have a cumulative effect. I have been ebaying stuff I no longer want or need, and make a cool £80 last weekend from junk.

The people from RugDoctor happened to email me during this méle of declutter so I thought you might like to see their top tips for a Spring Clean. I had added mine too, so you can get started on a Diva Geek Clean while the Spring Sun is shining:

1. Take it one room at a time Make sure you plan ahead and choose where to begin, make a list of the areas you want to target and tackle them one step at a time. Be sure to budget time for distractions too-unexpected visitors and phone calls are inevitable! (ok, I am really bad at this but it’s good advice. I tend to start in 3 rooms, have them all over the floor simultaneously, get really stressed after a while and rely on Miles to come and calm me down with wine. Their advice is much more sane.)

2. Declutter before your clean Always declutter before a polish, make sure your area is good to go before you don your gloves and spray. (yup, liking this.)

3. Deep clean those carpets Nothing refreshes a room more than a clean carpet, and hiring a Rug Doctor can have your carpets looking, feeling and smelling as good as new in no time. (ok, our carpets are covered in toddler goo, indecipherable crusty matter and chalk, so this is a good plan. When I can see the carpet, that is).

4. Make your vases blooming lovely What better way to freshen up your home than with a bunch of sweet-smelling blooms. Handpick some flowers from your garden for a sweet smelling aroma. (yes! This! *rushes to buy gerberas*).

5. Add a splash of vinegar to make those windows shine A top tip for making those windows squeaky clean is to add some vinegar to water and spray onto the glass, then simply wipe clean with a dust free cloth. (Hmm. or call the window cleaner? One does have a blog to write, a company to run, kids to feed, washing to do, The Tube to watch…)

6. Care for your curtains Are your curtains looking drab? Well take them down, remove the hooks and give them a quick cycle in the dryer with a wet towel to rid the dust. (Yip, although no amount of un-drabbing will save them from toddler claws. Maybe in the future. Ooh that vinegar came in handy for my chips in the end).

7. Revamp your wardrobe Empty your wardrobe of all your clothes and give it a good scrub, you never know you might find a couple of items you’d forgotten about too.( I love doing this, it’s always like finding a whole new set of clothes! Always room for more though. And shoes. *looks at Irregular Choice*  I am still waiting for the ‘phone to ring re my sponsorship. Rude.)

8.Open the windows for fresh air Winter is over so open up those windows and let the good fresh air billow through your home. (Yes, yes yes. Also maybe leave via windows and sit in pub garden? Much more fresh air there.)

9. Start from the top and work your way down With each room start at the ceiling and get rid of the cobwebs before working your way down walls and finishing with the floor. (well, I am just pleased I am doing something, but I like the advice).

10.  Get the kids to lend a hand (are you kidding? They are 2. This ends in chaos).

Have you got e declutter bug this Spring? Have you gone techy with it? Let me know.. x

Hidden inspiration

I love it when a Spring clean garage rummage unearths an old sketchbook – yesterday I dug out an old collection of things from college and I love the printmaking, mark making, sketches and colours of some of my work. Time to get the paints out again I think? Happiness lies in a messy art studio :) .

Well, I got myself out there again today, only for 2.5 miles but after nearly 6 months out of running since my half marathon achievement was followed by harsh treatment for my endometriosis, it felt amazing to be on my feet in the Spring sunshine :) .
