Hope for endo – at a price

Posted on: Wednesday, May 18, 2011

I have recently been feeling as if there is no hope for endometriosis sufferers from conventional medicine, that a life of pain managed in the best way we can is all we can hope for.

True, I believe the body can heal and I work towards that on a daily basis, but in terms of available options from surgery or pharmaceuticals it has been pretty slim pickings – often the side effects are as bad as the endo itself for life impaction and general shittiness.

Imagine my surprise the, to read this article posted by the Endo UK Facebook page yesterday (believe me  I don’t read the Daily Fail otherwise) on a surgeon and his innovative techniques to eradicate endometriosis.

Ashwini Trehan, consultant gynaecological surgeon at the Spire Elland Hospital in Halifax and Dewsbury District Hospital  has developed a technique which involves the complete eradication of the perineum, the membrane lining the pelvic cavity. This procedure allows for new skin to grow back, without endometrial adhesions.

That’s right, WITHOUT endometrial adhesions.

This makes the surgery far more effective than current diathermy practices as in most cases endo returns after laparoscopic surgery requiring more “management” by the Mirena Coil, and drugs like Zoladex.

Natually, I hot footed it over to Mr Trehan’s site in much excitement, and read the reports and data included there which cite the success rates of his surgery and describe the effectiveness. It’s really impressive stuff – go and have a look, but be warned, the images of s newly stripped pelic cavity are not well partnered with a queasy disposition.

So, all good on the hood, right? It CAN be done, let’s go?

Well, yes and no….

The NHS do offer the surgery but only for residents of Yorkshire, it doesnt come under the Choose and Book service as this guy has got too darn popular. No wonder, changing women’s lives and preseerving fertility, he is our man of the moment as far as I can concerned.

Privately, yes it’s nice and easy to book but the procedure costs in the region of £10,000, and as any one with endo knows, you can’t have private healthcare with existing conditions.

So. There we have it. There is hope, but a mountain of challenges to get there. I need £10k, in effect. And so do the other women that need the surgery so badly.

I would get it, I would do car boot sales ad infinitum, fundraising, begging, borrowing, singing for my supper, all of that.

What do you think? Should I raise money for my surgery? Ho do you feel about options being limited to postcodes?
