Thinking in movies – NLP and me

Posted on: Monday, May 30, 2011

One of the best bits of advice I have had this week was from the fantastic Jo James of Amber Life, the NLP expert in my life. If you are new to NLP, neuro linguistic programming is all about changing how your thought patterns work, and it really is powerful stuff. Read More >

If you are stuck for something to do this weekend this looks like a plan.

Penguin books are celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Penguin Modern Classics collection along with National ‘Share-A-Story’ month, by opening up a free Lawn Library on the Piazza in Covent Garden.

If I were in town today you would find me here, coffee in hand. I am a sucker for a Modern Classic, it must be said.

And sitting.

And deckchairs.

And reading.

And London.

Tweet me with a pic if you visit!

The Covent Garden Lawn Library will open at be open until Monday 23rd May 2011, from 10am – 6pm.

Brighton Uni Photography – Bliss looks at Endo

Posted on: Sunday, May 22, 2011

Student photographer Bliss Nayler is an endo girl too.

Her work forms oart of the Brighton University graduate photographers exhibition STARE at Lighthouse from 3rd – 9th June 2011.

Bliss’s part of the exhibition consists of 3 images and a 33 page book.; the book explores the different effects of living with endometriosis, with aspects of the condition depicted through portraits, cyanotypes, scans and overlays of images. Her main areas of focus are the effects of painkillers, trips to hospital, fertility “as well as the loneliness that comes with this ailment.”

I find the meat image particularly hard to look at, even as an endo girl myself.

Go and check out Bliss’ work and the other graduates at Lighthouse, Unit 1, Zone B, 28 Kensington Street, Brighton, BN1 4AJ. See also the Facebook event page.

Rockin’ weddings

Posted on: Thursday, May 19, 2011

I have the honour of being bridesmaid in September for the very lovely Jamie and Lauren, my other half’s brother and sister-in-law to be, so weddingness is all around us right now.

It is an honour to be involved in their special day and to be part of the planning that goes into such things. My partner and I are also engaged, although in a much more laid back way – we had our children first (knowing that endo might make things tricky), so for us the actual day is not quite such a big deal.

I have, however, tentatively started a leeeetle Pinterest board on the subject, and when I discovered, rather late to the party, the wonderful Rock n Roll Bride blog I am rather more inspired.

Kat Williams, the force behind the blog, began documenting her journey to plan her wedding a few years ago. The project has since evolved to a fantastic hub for the most innovative, original, and, best of all – budget weddings I have seen.

Most budget weddings that are reported are clearly not sticking to the kind of budget we will have; ie, “we still need to pay mortgage and bills and feed the kids, 20 grand is ridiculous” kind of budget.

I think that, for most parents who get married after having kids it is the same. Why spend money on just one day when you could have a new car/family holiday/eat for a while?

I love also to see a blog success story, and Kat’s certainly is one. She now monetises Rock n Roll bride in various ways and is a full time blogger, which I think is amazing. The imagery for her site is aesthetically gorgeous, and I love the fact that all advertising is in keeping with the ethos of the blog.

Go and check out some of the wedding stories, they are truly inspirational. And check out too the Rainbow Hair, by Elbie van Eeden. Loving it!

Right, back to Pinterest for me.

No brainer

Posted on: Thursday, May 19, 2011

I don’t claim to have been the most intelligent woman in my prime (for prime, read “before kids and sleep deprivation”), but it’s safe to say I did have some brain cells, I am pretty sure.

I managed teams of people, projects, budgets and everything. Honest, guv.

So why couldn’t I work out £10 minus £1.50 yesterday at the toddler group, much to my frustration?

I am shocked at how quickly the adage “use it or lose it”  steps in. My brain is used for a portion of the week at work, while the remaining slice, although by FAR the most important job I do, is mummydom. I am failing to challenge my brain on a daily basis, and crikey it’s scarey.

I listen to Radio 4 when washing up (channelling my mother as I go), to try and cram some form of adult vocaubulary into a day which is otherwise spent chasing kids around a church hall full of toys or hoovering for the 90th time.

I can see why women lose their confidence in motherhood. It’s a whole new job, and an infinitely wonderful and important one at that, but we need to keep the grey matter from rotting. I can’t give to my kids if I have turned into mush myself.

Don’t even get me started on Loose Women. I am sure the drainage they put on the nation’s intelligence is the root of all evil.

What say you?

Things I don’t understand #2

Posted on: Wednesday, May 18, 2011

The dog thing.

The thing where some random animal comes bounding up to your crotch, sniffs your intimate genitalia profusely and the owners not only let them but actively encourage the act. “Ahh, he’s alright, he likes you! Look!”.

Then, astoundingly, the “do you like dogs?”  question –  which, when politely answered in the neutral, is ignored and thusly the canine sees fit to proceed to slobber/sniff/paw and generally engraciate itself on your personal space.

I do like dogs, don’t get me wrong, but if I came and sniffed your crotch despite your protestations would you be happy?!

You would?

Oh.
